ABOUT STEFANO TOMASSINI

Stefano Tomassini is Associate Professor in Dance Studies at Iuav University in Venice (I). He studied Italian Baroque Literature and Theatre in Parma (BA) and Turin (PhD), as well as theatre acting, staging and dance in Parma and Piacenza (he was awarded the 2002 National Association of Italian Theatrical Criticism). His critical edition of Salvatore Viganò, Prometeo. Libretto del ballo, con i testi della polemica, was awarded the Marino Moretti Prize. From 2013 to 2016 he has collaborated with the artistic director of the Dance Department of La Biennale di Venezia (I), and from 2015 to 2019 he has been dance curator for the LAC (Lugano, CH). In 2017 he was a jury member for the 2019 Dance Swiss Days (Lausanne). He has been in 2010 Scholar-in-Residence at the Archive of the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival (Lee, Mass.), on a project about Ted Shawn Archive, and in 2016 at Scenario Pubblico - Centro Nazionale di Produzione della Danza (Catania, I), on a project about dance reconstruction. He is currently a dance writer for the online magazine «Teatro e Critica». In his current book project, Stefano researches the choreographic responses to the music of J.S. Bach during the XXth century. His scholarly interests also include the intersection of dance and sound studies and the connection of performance with queer studies and critical theory. He has held visiting fellowship at UCL (UK) and Magdalen College (Oxford), at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts (Fulbright-Shuman Scholar Grant, 20••••09) and Columbia University (Italian Academy, 2011), and has been a Visiting Lecturer at Princeton University (2010) and University of Pennsylvania (2018). From 2021 he is honorary member of the Danzare Cecchetti ANCEC Italia association. More recently, he curated the editorial online project «Quello che vede l\'acqua» (a videocreation, a sound creation and a digital book) for the Manifesto Lingua Madre - Capsule per il futuro edited by the LAC of Lugano (CH). For the three-year period 20••••24 he will be a member of the Advisory Commission of Dance (Commissione consultiva per la danza) of the Italian Ministry of Culture (MIC).
