ABOUT STEFANO SALMASO

My research focuses on the development of innovative systems for site-selective drug delivery and controlled release. The projects I lead are aimed at studying carriers at the nanoscale. I\'m fascinated by nanotechnology and its applications in drug development and biomedicine. During my scientific career I have generated nanosystems that can improve the performance of the currently available drugs, therapeutic proteins and siRNA, reducing the side effects and enhancing the pharmaceutical profile. At the University of Padova I focus on the development of stimuli sensitive systems whose response is spatially and temporally controlled allowing for cell/tissue bio-recognition and on-site drug release. We mainly deal with carrier features at interface to program its behavior. My major research activities include: 1-Development of responsive gold based nanosystems for cancer treatment. 2-Development of environmentally responsive liposomes, micelles and polymersomes for the delivery of drugs, protein and siRNA. 3-Protein and cytokines formulation by physical association with amphiphilic polymers. 4-Modification of surfaces with “smart” polymers to provide remote cell sorting and isolation. In 2009 I was recipient of a three-years grant from European Commission in the framework of the FP VII (NanoSCI ERAnet) to develop \"smart\" carriers for the siRNA delivery. Since 2016 I am international team member of the (ITN)- Marie Skłodowska-Curie action with the project “Ocuther” that aims at generating novel therapies for eye deseases. Publications: 61; book chapters: 3, international patents; 3; meeting presentations: 80. Expertise: Bioconjugation strategies. Proteins formulation by physical association or conjugation with polymers. Developmet of physically assembled drug nanocarriers. Cell biology techniques: toxicity studies, nanocarrier/cell association studies, imaging. In vivo: PK and biodistribution of drug loaded nanocarriers.
