ABOUT STEFANIE ICKERT-BOND

My research interests focus on phylogenetic relationships, biogeography, and gene evolution in three diverse groups of vascular plants: 1) arid shrub genus Ephedra (Mormon-Tea, Gnetales), 2) arctic members of the Old World- New World disjunct genus Oxytropis (Fabaceae) and 3) the Asian-North American disjunct family Altingiaceae (the sweet gums;). My research program uses a variety of molecular approaches, morphology, anatomy, paleobotany, original field studies and techniques of phylogenetic analysis to elucidate patterns and processes of vascular plant evolution, particularly in selected groups of angiosperms and gymnosperms. My current research concentrates on three major areas: 1) molecular systematics, phylogeny, biogeography and morphological evolution of New World Ephedra and Oxytropis; 2) integration of fossil data to biogeography, speciation and character evolution in these groups and others; and 3) revisionary systematics and floristic work in Western North America. In addition to my research focus my interest in collection development and curation is also strong. As the PI on a NSF Biol. Research Collection grant to the Univ. of Alaska Herbarium, we aim to showcase an active, expanding, modern herbarium with images and data of all specimens integrated into a state-of-the-art database, and interlinked with online resources such as MorphBank, GenBank, map servers, and portals federating similar data from many institutions, e.g. Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).Specialties: Phylogenetic relationships, biogeography, and gene evolution in: 1) Ephedra (Gnetales), 2) arctic members of Oxytropis (Fabaceae) and 3) the Asian-North American disjunct Altingiaceae. Additional interests include conifer biogeography and evolution, biodiversity of Alaskan floras, reconstruction of paleo-CO2 using stomatal proxy method, analysis of carbon isotope discrimination and effects on water use efficiency; and classical revisionary and floristic work.
