Developers and Architects - how are you responding?Within the last year, the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the National Realtors Association have all reported that people are looking at pet amenities when considering which property to buy or rent. In addition, Forbes stated that “.”Yet, housing is not currently designed to be enriching for our furry friends. Some apartment complexes may include a 10\' x 20\' strip of artificial turf and chain link fence as part of their \"pet package\", but spaces like these are not truly pet-centered. We can do better. How about a Dog Sensory Garden? Or a \"Fetch Zone\"? Or a parklet that is designed you residents and their dogs to hang out together-\'. All it takes is animal-behavior knowledge and a good dose of creativity.And by including amenities for renters\' pets, developers are moving their projects and finally tapping into the $.In addition, pet-centered amenities attract residents who typically • • ()•.So where do my ideas come from? Over the past years, I have been supplementing my design degree with animal behavior coursework. I earned a certificate in Applied Animal Behavior from the University of Washington as well as completed classes at Oxford and the University of Edinburgh. This new knowledge of what animals need combined with my landscape architecture degree, and topped off by my lifelong love of all animals, gives me deeper insight and creativity in designing for pets.
