1. Youth Care Worker

   Part inspirational and motivational coach, and part enforcer of the rules and boundaries of the program, I work with teenagers in trouble with the law. I quickly build relationships based on mutual respect and trust with each of the youth, who are only with us 30-45 days. I teach to over 50 basic life skills continuously every day, on everything from how to ask permission, to how to learn to accept no for an answer, to how to show respect for others, and even greeting skills. I look past the criminal records of the youth and show compassion to kids hurting and confused as to how to relate to the world. I encourage each youth to let go of their past, move forward, take ownership of their life, and live to their potential. I model positivity to teenagers given to complaining and point them to count their blessings each day. I work within a small team of like-minded adults wanting to care for youth. I am challenged to hold kids accountable for their actions, to not always need to be \"liked\", but to enforce discipline when necessary. This role has helped me grow and continues to help me develop as not just an employee but the kind of person I want to become.
