Meet Prof. Sridhar RajuWith a PhD from IIT Kharagpur and over two decades of rich experience in civil engineering research and academia, Prof. Sridhar Raju is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus. Serving as the Associate Dean of Academics for Undergraduate Studies, he plays a crucial role in shaping the future of civil engineering education. Professional Journey: Prof. Raju began his career in the Flexible Pavements Division at the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), New Delhi, where he contributed as a Scientist from to 2008. His expertise led him to Shell Bitumen & Asphalt R&D Centre in Bangalore, where he served as a Senior Researcher from 2009 to 2015, working on cutting-edge advancements in asphalt and pavement technologies. Research & Innovation: His research includes Pavement Management Systems, the Use of a higher percentage of RAP in the design of Bituminous Mixtures, and the Design of Flexible Pavements with Geosynthetics. Notably, he has been instrumental in revising essential guidelines like IRC: SP: 98-2020 on waste plastic in bituminous mixes, IRC: 12•••19 for open-graded friction courses, and IRC: SP:13•••22, Manual for the Design of Hot Bituminous Mixes. Patented Innovations: Prof. Raju has secured two patents that mark significant contributions to sustainable road construction:Waste Plastic Modified Bitumen for improved rut and water resistance in bituminous mixes (Indian Patent No. 246060).Bio-based Encapsulation for Bitumen Pellets designed for cold supply, enhancing practical applications in road construction (Indian Patent No. Guiding Future Leaders: Currently, Prof. Raju has graduated three PhD candidates, mentoring three PhD scholars and leading critical research initiatives, including a project sponsored by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways aimed at developing a deterioration model for top-down cracking in bituminous pavements.
