  1. Principal

    Spacecutter

Jan 2009 — Present · New York, NY, US

SPACECUTTER is a multidisciplinary, high-design architecture, interiors, and design firm, led by Alex Gil. The studio is interested in the creation of thoughtful, idea-driven artifacts, large and small. The award-winning work ranges from private residences and hospitality spaces, to conceptual design proposals, industrial design, and highly figured art objects.Notable projects include:Cut Triplex townhouse, Chicago, IL (2017)The Cut Triplex townhouse balances privacy and openness, maximizing the narrow but deepChicago property to carve out a light-filled 5,300 square foot residence. Behind the monolithicblack brick facade lies an inviting and light interior. Winner of the 2018 Iconic Award Innovative Architecture by the German Design Council.Carved Duplex, Brooklyn, NY (2011)Carved Duplex is a rooftop addition to a brick townhouse in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The fully-redesigned penthouse apartment takes over the third floor and expands upward via a COR-TEN box. The project slowly unfolds from a black bedroom on the lower level to white living room on the upper level. Monolith Table (2012)A timeless piece that gets better with age and wear; constructed of solid wood to last a thousand years. All too often, the pairing of a dining table with chairs is not fully considered. Monolith Table, however, is conceived as a singular block. When not in use the chair, bench and throne are tucked underneath the table leaving a singular eroded mass. It is a functional, interpretation of the monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey.Ceiling Texture (2010)A weekend home for a New York City-couple, the project involved opening the back of the house to the lake and installing oversize custom wood windows. To integrate the new window wall into the large living/dining space, a serial wood lining radiates from the window head into the cavernous space.
