ABOUT SOPHIE BARLEY
I am a recent graduate of Florida State University with dual Bachelor of Science degrees in International Affairs and Asian Studies with an Emphasis in Business. My academic foundation, focused on economics, international trade, and Mandarin Chinese, is complemented by hands-on experience in international policy research and nonprofit management. Through internships with the U.S. Commercial Service to the Asian Development Bank, and the International Rescue Committee, I have developed a deep interest in the intersections of global governance, development finance, and migration policy. My role in organizing a multi-city ADB Roadshow and conducting policy research on U.S-Asia commercial engagement sharpened my analytical and organizational skills, while my work supporting Ukrainian refugees gave me first-hand insight into humanitarian operations and the implementation of federal programs. At the LeRoy Collins Institute, I supported policy research on governance and electoral systems, strengthening my administrative acumen and reinforcing my commitment to nonpartisan, evidence-based policy work. I am particularly drawn to projects at the nexus of U.S-China relations, international development, and geopolitical strategy, and I explored these themes in-depth in my honors thesis on the Chinese Communist Party’s evolving approaches to legitimacy. As I pursue research and policy roles in think tanks, government, or nonprofit institutions, I bring a collaborative spirit, an eye for detail, and a strong desire to contribute to global dialogue and solutions. I’m especially interested in work related to U.S-China foreign policy, trade relations, and international security.
