View department →

London, GB

I generally look for editing projects particularly but not exclusively in fiction. I can do every kind of edit, whether structural, line editing or copy-editing. I am not currently available for editing until November 2018.I have been translating alongside my editing work since 2005. I am particularly interested in taking on translations from Brazilian Portuguese at the moment but will be happy to look at anything broadly literary in French or Portuguese. I can provide reader reports and samples as required.

ABOUT SOPHIE LEWIS

In January 2018, I joined the editorial team at the Folio Society to work on fiction for all ages. In April 2019 I became managing editor, working with editors in-house and freelance, and retaining responsibility for some more complex book projects. Mid-April 2020, I left Folio in order to go fully freelance once more. Until May 2016 I was principal commissioning editor, but also networking, planning and fundraising, for And Other Stories press. Here I gained experience in editing translations but also edited much original English work, including Deborah Levy\'s Man Booker shortlisted novel \'Swimming Home\' and other works by her. From then I went freelance, mainly editing fiction, for publishers including CB Editions, Catedral (Spain), Peirene Press, And Other Stories and Tilted Axis, as well as for individual authors. I am also a literary translator, working from French to English and Portuguese to English, with book-length translations published by Pushkin Press, Saqi Books, Picador, Faber, Jonathan Cape, Feminist Press, And Other Stories, NYRB Press, Les Fugitives and Hesperus Press, among others. I also guest edited an issue of Sonofabook magazine (CB Editions), and do occasional editorial work and consulting for publishers such as Sylph Editions and Litro Magazine. Specialties: editing and copy-editing fiction from around the world; translation from French and Portuguese to English, translation practice and profile-raising; literary events management; publicity development. I am particularly interested in short stories (I helped to found the BBC National Short Story Award) and in work from India, Brazil, Portugal, France and francophone countries, particularly Haiti and Madagascar. In July 2015 I returned from four and a half years in Brazil, having learned Portuguese, and I am keen to continue forging and developing links between the literary worlds of the UK and Brazil. In 2016 I co-founded a creative translation workshops business called Shadow Heroes, introducing secondary-school students to concepts and opportunities in translation. After leading jointly for two years, I stepped back to join the board and continue to support Shadow Heroes\' work in every way I can.
