The demand for lithium in Europe, created by the electrical vehicle industry, exceeds the current domestic supply. IMERYS Lithium France is working on a sustainable solution to address this issue through the EMILI Project. The project aims to extract lithium-rich lepidolite mica from a deposit located beneath an existing kaolin pit in Beauvoir, Allier. The deposit contains approximately 1% Li2O. The process involves a concentration plant that will produce mica concentrate through multi-stage comminution followed by floatation. The concentrate will be transported via underground pipes to a railway station, and then by railway to a conversion plant, where it will be converted into LHM. The budget for commercial plants is 1.8€bn, and the budget for pilot plants is 154€mn. The expected operational capacity is 2.1MT p.a. to achieve an extraction of 34KT LHM. The targeted commissioning date for the project is in the third quarter of 2028, and the expected lifespan of the project is 30+ years.
