ABOUT SONYA HOWARD

Over three years’ combined work and professional development experience in evaluation, as well as over 15 years’ experience in the Indigenous sphere, both on and off-reserve, ranging from engagement, advocacy, treaty implementation and federal languages legislation development, to designing, delivering, researching, and evaluating social programs at the local, regional, and national levels.At the individual level, I’ve worked directly with Indigenous youth facing barriers getting into the trades.At the regional and national level, I’ve designed, developed, and supervised research studies and implementation plans, and led engagement and interviews to inform employment and training, childcare and early learning, and culturally responsive social services for Indigenous peoples in urban areas. I’ve contributed to culturally informed customizations of employment and training models, as well as customized tools to support holistic, culturally grounded measurement and demonstration of skills in ways that may be more meaningful to Indigenous participants. Most recently, guided by a spirit of seeking to work together in right relation, I’ve been supporting organizations in recognizing, understanding, and building tools to support culturally safe and anti-oppressive approaches to evaluation, engagement, training, employment, and working with, for and alongside those who have experienced marginalization.
