About Sonja Shaffer
I’m a mission-driven nonprofit leader with more than 20 years of experience building programs, cultivating relationships, and supporting teams in the arts and education sectors. My work has always been grounded in a commitment to expanding access, creating opportunities, and helping communities thrive.I currently serve as Executive Director of University Academy Foundation, a Kansas City–based nonprofit that supports University Academy students and alumni. Our mission is to help students prepare for college, graduate from college, and launch meaningful careers through scholarships, mentoring, and enrichment opportunities.Over the years, I’ve had the chance to work alongside talented teams and dedicated partners to develop programs, manage projects, and plan events that make a real difference. I enjoy bringing people together, sharing stories that inspire support, and helping organizations grow in ways that are thoughtful and sustainable. I’m also energized by the work of driving organizational excellence—bringing a focus on strategy, innovation, and continuous improvement to everything I do.I believe in leading with integrity, curiosity, and creativity—and I believe deeply in the power of education to change lives.
