About Somenath B.
Current project (Object Storage Devices, Secure Scalable Storage Server, S4): More and more applications are running storage traffic over the tcp/ip and ethernet network. Earlier we had only NFS, HTTP, CIFS or NCP traffic running over tcp/ip network: There was a common pattern among those access, they were all based on file system protocols so issues were similar. with the emergence of SCSI-4 (Object Storage Devices)+ RAID, iSCSI (in some sense FCoE too). In addition to this, pattern of network storage traffic is also changing. This will throw newer challenges to tcp/ip and ethernet network. I have dealt with some of these very critical storage networking issues over ip/ethernet network in my current work for secure scalable storage server (aka S4); some of these issues are still not solved in industry and that keeps this space exciting for me.Past project (RDMA and RDMA enabled Applications):With the emergence of 10Gbps and higher speed interconnect and networks current method of accessing data over wire will change. Current methods are not tuned to exploit the advantages of future architecture. My interest is in this problem area. Develop true off-loaded architecture and applications based on RDMA.My interest in this area developed during my early days of work at Wipro where I have spent considerable amount of time in intelligent IO devices and off-loading unix kernel specific tasks to off-host processor.Afterwards in Novell I spent considerable amount of time in zero-copy network and transferring data using tuned filesystems protocol over zero-copy network.Along, the same lines I worked on DAFS(Direct Access Filesystem Protocol) which utilized VIA like transports for zero-copy data transfer. My current interest is to develop more applications in this area.Specialties: My expertise area: Object Storage Devices, Storage and Networking, Cluster File Systems, RDMA based clustering, InfiniBand/VIA/Remote Direct Data Placement, Distributed File Systems
