About Somalie Inez

Somalie Inez is a writer, producer, actor and director from Washington, D.C. At age of 16 she then moved to the Lower East-Side in New York City. Years later she moved to the Bronx N.Y. Then ultimately Los Angeles in order to continue to expand her artistic path. Inez wrote “Broken Songs” which is based on her true life story, a narrative piece derived from the short film “MAYA”. Which surrounds the hardship, love, loss, and perseverance. This was featured at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood headlined after Jamie Foxx and Ron Howard’s short film. Inez also has written and directer a documentary series entitled \"Tell Your Story\" which is a PSA that also hit the big screen at the TLC Chinese theater March 2020 highlighting real-life challenges. Inez was a co-star on the Amazon series “Transparent”. Inez loves the entertainment industry all across the board and finds her biggest passion is producing, writing and directing. Inez is passionate and a highly energetic content creator that inspires people through her filmmaking. She is changing lives by utilizing her voice and sharing her story to give positive change to our urban communities and for all people globally. Her mission is beautifully simple; she does not consider herself as a victim or a survivor. She calls herself a fierce conqueror by turning pain into power!

REACH! is the Asian/Pacific Islander Recruitment and Retention Center at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1994, REACH! began with a handful of committed folks, as a program under the Asian Student Union (ASU) at UC Berkeley to target “Asian Pacific American, high school students, especially those who are underrepresented, low-income, and non-college tracked”. Its goals were two-fold: 1) promoting higher education as an attainable goal and 2) empowering students through “building ethnic pride and programs that foster community activism and support APA youth culture”. As REACH! grew organizationally, the vision and purpose of REACH! grew with it. While the mission remained, “the service and empowerment of recent immigrant and urban Asian Pacific Americans living in at-risk life situations,” we added on that “Our goal is to promote higher education as a means to empower ourselves and improve the economic and social conditions facing our communities.” We saw that REACH! had a unique role on campus and in the API community at large, because REACH! was not just going to increase the numbers of underrepresented Asians at Berkeley but REACH! would be a training ground for future educators, activists, and leaders who would address society’s injustices through their life’s work. Thus, we created programs to raise political awareness, build coalitions, develop youth leaders, and build leadership in ourselves. Each year, programs have been refined and recreated by (insanely) dedicated and intelligent coordinators, who look for a better way to do things. However, our single most important legacy is the steady stream of community leaders we have and will produce. REACH! Mission Statement: "Committed to the service, empowerment, and mobilization of immigrant, refugee, and underserved Asian/Pacific Islanders by promoting higher education to empower ourselves and challenge the economic and social inequalities facing our communities" Educate, Empower, Change.
