About Solveig Ksander Hicks
Hello! I\'m Solveig, I\'m a junior at WashU in St. Louis majoring in English Literature with Minors in Legal Studies and Psychological and Brain Sciences. Though most interested in pursuing a career in law, I feel that I possess the necessary communication skills, empathy, and work ethic to make me successful in a variety of professional, academic, and civic engagement settings. While I have a multitude of academic interests and extracurricular passions, the primary joy of my life is reading and writing. Over the course of my high school and college involvement with political/social advocacy campaigns and business programs, I realized that my passion lay in my skill as an effective communicator. Regardless of the discipline, every cause is in need of careful and creative writer: someone who can thoughtfully craft language that both intrigues the reader as well as imparts relevant knowledge. I am currently studying English Literature via courses providing a canonical overview of Western authors. I greatly enjoy and am skilled in writing literary analysis on works ranging from Shakespeare\'s \"Richard II\", to Virginia Woolf\'s \"Orlando\", and even to Zadie Smith\'s \"White Teeth\", to name a few of my studied works from my time at WashU. As I continue in my education, I am excited to take more specific era/author study courses, as well as pursue the English Honors program in my senior year, in which I will research and write a 50-70 page thesis. My communication skills have been the tenet of my success in internships. As a campaign intern for Bloomington, Indiana mayor John Hamilton, I spent hours writing donor letters, thank you notes, and speaking with voters to urge them to vote for Mayor Hamilton. This experience required me to grow both my oral and written communication skills, something I am extremely grateful for. I also served as an intern for the Kelley School of Business International Programs Department, and created a variety of written media content for the department including social media posts, virtual country-specific study guides, and environmental/ethical travel resources for the website. I am confident that my writing and communication skills will enable me to find success, regardless of the discipline I pursue. Whether applied to law, publishing, academic writing, marketing/copywriting, or commercial public relations, I know that I would be a valuable communications asset to any team.
