London and Cambridge, GB

My research focuses on the integration of on-demand sources of quantum light within hybrid photonic devices, combining optical design, simulation, and experimental characterisation to advance scalable quantum photonic hardware. This work is being carried out as part of my PhD in Luca Sapienza’s Integrated Quantum Photonics Group at the University of Cambridge. The project is co-funded by industry and the EPSRC through the intercollegiate CDT in Photonic and Electronic Systems, jointly run by the University of Cambridge and UCL.

ABOUT SOLOMON MCKIERNAN

I am a doctoral researcher pursuing a PhD through the Centre for Doctoral Training in Photonic and Electronic Systems. Based at the University of Cambridge, within the Integrated Quantum Photonics Group, my research focuses on integrating on-demand sources of quantum light into hybrid photonic devices. My work sits at the interface of electronic and photonic engineering, with the aim of enabling scalable quantum technologies. Before transitioning to academia full-time, I spent seven years in industry developing high-frequency RF and microwave electronics, photonic systems, and quantum technologies. Early-career rotations across multiple technical functions (including hardware, software, and quality assurance) gave me a systems-level understanding of complex product development in the aerospace and defence sectors. Building on this experience and a master’s degree in photonic and electronic systems, my current research combines hands-on device design with simulation, fabrication, and experimental characterisation across optical and electrical domains. I am particularly motivated by the challenge of translating emerging quantum photonic concepts into practical, manufacturable technologies for real-world applications, including secure communications, precision sensing, and quantum information processing.
