About Solange Acosta Rodríguez
I am an outdoor educator, scholar, and activist who is working towards building a more environmentally just future. I firmly believe in the power of place-based education as a way to connect meaningfully with our environments, and therefore foster sustainable livelihoods for all.By using geographic tools and methods, I work to create and support complex understandings of our world\'s problems in order to generate meaningful solutions. As an undergraduate researcher with the Irving Institute\'s Energy Justice clinic, I spent two years researching Indigenous resistance movements to hydropower development through environmental policy and law reviews, GIS systems, and media analysis. This work culminated with a publication in the journal Climate and Development and an undergraduate honors thesis. I am also very passionate about deconstructing the \"outdoors\" as a place of exclusion through my work at the High Mountain Institute and in the Dartmouth Outing Club. I currently co-lead the Hikers of Hue affinity space for students on campus to help empower those from marginalized backgrounds in the outdoors. I have served in leadership roles in People of Color Outdoors, Cabin & Trail Club, Ledyard Canoe Club, and the Divisions of Inclusivity, Justice, and Equity. I have also put my passion for stewardship into action by working 2 seasons with the Dartmouth College Trail Crew to improve our section of the Appalachian Trail. My strong interpersonal and communication skills have been developed through my multiple years of experience as a supervisor and barista at Novack Cafe. I have applied these skills in my time as the Director\'s Assistant to the Dartmouth Guarini Institute, as well as in my time working as an Adventure Operations Assistant with Exit Glacier Guides and Liquid Adventures.
