ABOUT SOFIA FLEURY-MENDIBLE

I am a pre-medicine student at the University of North Carolina majoring in Nutrition, Health, and Society, driven by a strong interest in preventive care, health equity, and community-based approaches to wellness. I’m especially motivated by the idea that health outcomes are shaped not only by biology, but by access to resources, education, and supportive environments. My academic and extracurricular experiences have pushed me to think critically about how nutrition, lifestyle, and social context intersect with chronic and preventable disease.Outside the classroom, I am deeply committed to service and community engagement. I have spent much of my time helping plan and support volunteer initiatives, building relationships with local organizations, and creating opportunities for groups to serve together in meaningful ways. More recently, I have been involved in efforts to launch a community garden initiative in Clinton, NC, aimed at improving access to fresh food while promoting sustainable, preventative lifestyle health. This work reflects my belief that lasting change happens when communities are empowered with both resources and agency.Looking ahead, I hope to pursue a career in medicine that integrates clinical care with community-centered prevention. I am particularly interested in roles that allow me to combine patient care, nutrition education, and public health advocacy to address health disparities at both the individual and population level.
