A selection of projects:• Practical guidance for national road authorities to apply evidence-based measures to increase highway capacity without deterioration in road safety (Conference of European Directors of Roads).• Design, development and testing of a range of tunnel interior design options. Used an online survey road users) to determine interior tunnel designs that are aesthetically favourable and/or reduce stress and anxiety when driving through a road tunnel and testing in a full-scale driving simulator study.• Supported development and testing of close following (tailgating) monitoring equipment on the SRN, including research into road user behaviour, and off- and on-road testing.• Evidence-based summary of the risks between interaction with in-vehicle technologies and attentiveness required for performing the driving task.• Comprehensive survey for the DfT across 90 sites of driver hand-held mobile phone use and seat belt compliance by drivers and vehicle occupants.• To develop Highways England’s Pilots and trials guidance on the safe and efficient running of pilots, trials and demonstration projects across the full breadth of Highways England’s innovation activities.• Systematic literature review and a best practice review of vision and hearing testing, benchmarking exercise as well as arranging and conducting site visits.• To update Network Rail\'s medical standard related to colour vision assessment.• To analyse and compare Network Rail’s drug and alcohol testing methodology against best practices within other industries.• Investigated new methods and processes to improve data capture in relation to pavement defect inspection.• Investigation of mobile phone detection whilst driving technologies, including off- and on-road trials of prototype sensors.• To develop Highways England’s understanding of driver frustration, stress and aggression on the SRN, including how it is experienced and its impact on driving behaviour.
