ABOUT SARAH MASON-RENTON
I have over ten years experience assessing complex environmental issues and innovative technological solutions at the intersection of sustainability, infrastructure, and community development globally. My experience broadly includes the planning, development, and implementation of various sustainable innovations and solutions related to waste and resource management, utility development, energy generation, agriculture and rural community development, with a primary focus on biosolids resource recovery and wastewater optimization. I have been extensively involved with interdisciplinary communication and engagement, helping to bridge the gap between the technical and non-technical. I also have expertise with the policy and decision-making processes that surround these cases. Much of my work has involved wastewater facility assessment, recommending site specific solutions for optimization of biosolids and residuals resource recovery programs. Beyond the technical assessments and solutions associated with this, this work has included completing lifecycle assessments and support for funding application, contract development, and community engagement associated with these programs as needed. I have held leadership roles and or been involved in various associations including the Water Environment Association of Ontario, Canadian Waster and Wastewater Association, and Michigan Water Environment Association among others. I completed my Doctorate in Geography (Environment and Sustainability) at Western University, have an Honors BSc in Cellular Biology, and completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Institute for Resources, Environment, and Sustainability at the University of British Columbia. I was recognized as a Canada Vanier Scholar for excellence in leadership, research, and academic distinction. I have experience managing multiple projects collaborating with interdisciplinary teams involving government (federal, provincial, and municipal), industry, academic, and community (rural and Indigenous) partners. I am hard working, well organized, and add value through my experience in the field, exceptional communication skills, and strong passion for all that I do. Skills and competencies: project management, interdisciplinary and business communications, scientific communication, data analysis and management, proposal and report writing, lifecycle analysis, contract negotiation, public speaking, knowledge translation and mobilization, qualitative and quantitative research methods, and policy analysis.
