ABOUT JOHN SLOCOMBE
I was raised in a Canadian prairie town framed by a diamond shaped intersection of railroad tracks heading north, south, east and west. Where you could go anywhere from nowhere. Armed with my well worn world atlas (a gift from a perceptive grandmother), 10 year-old me dreamed of going everywhere. At 18, I was trained as a travel agent, with sights to operate my own tour company somewhere exotic. One month into my job at an agency, tour packages started selling direct to consumers on the internet. Within six months, my chosen profession evaporated. Not willing to let the world wait, I signed up for a two-year service mission to Peru. Learning Spanish broke me over and over until it became a strength and passion. Working alongside leaders and friends who could thrive under the most challenging circumstances was incredibly humbling and broadened my perspective on human potential. And most importantly, the seeds my parents planted finally took root - a conviction that there is nothing as fulfilling as serving others.Over the past 20 years my education, work and volunteer experience have followed the theme of service. I have built a federal public service career around service design and delivery and the development and implementation of economic and social policies. While I still read an atlas for fun on occasion, my work and hobbies have me creating maps and instructions to help myself and others understand how disparate parts fit into the macro picture. I think that may be my ultimate calling - an organizational cartographer of the policies, systems and structures needed to achieve the best results. For now, I\'ve found my purpose. If forces collide to make this role obsolete, I\'ll just go back out into the world and find myself again.
