In the laboratory of Dr. Michael A. Miller, UAHSF Endowed Chair in Biomedical Research in the School of Medicine at UABThe overarching theme of our research is to delineate the signaling mechanisms coordinating neuromuscular processes and to investigate their evolutionary origins.Our studies are providing insight into many neuromuscular diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinal muscular atrophy, and cancer. We are currently building multiple translational pipelines from animal models to the hospital clinic, focusing on the development of novel diagnostics and therapeutics for muscle disease and cancer. In the long term, the breadth of our basic science discoveries is likely to impact multiple human disorders. Constructing these pipelines involve collaborations among scientists and physicians, with the use of animal models, as well as human patients.
