About S. Jason Cole
Born and raised in the Midwest, I am a filmmaker, journalist, and artist with deep roots in rural America. With a diverse range of skills there’s no challenge I can’t tackle. I hold a Ph.D. in Film and Media Studies from the University of Kansas and have over 30 years of experience in media production, including more than a decade in higher education and leading creative teams. I am currently the co-founder and publisher of The Excelsior Citizen, a thriving local news publication serving the Excelsior Springs community. In this role, I oversee the editorial direction, digital strategy, and community engagement efforts for a multimedia platform that delivers hyperlocal journalism and fosters community connection. Since its inception, we’ve grown exponentially, now reaching thousands of readers monthly while remaining committed to the values of integrity and accessibility in local news. Previously, I served as the Manager of Video Content for Ogden Publications, where I produced video content for seven magazine titles, including Mother Earth News, Grit, and Utne Reader. I was responsible for every step of the video production process, from concept development to final distribution, ensuring content met both editorial and marketing goals across digital and print platforms. In addition to my work with The Excelsior Citizen, I remain a passionate freelance film and video producer, creating content for clients and pursuing personal projects, including documentaries, experimental films, and short animations. My work is driven by a love of storytelling, a commitment to rural communities, and the belief in the power of media to inspire change.
