ABOUT SITI ABDUL MALEK

Dr Siti holds a PhD in Food Science from Rutgers University – The State University of New Jersey.She retired from her position as Associate Professor in the Food, Chemical, and Biotechnology Cluster at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) in June 2023, after 6 years of service. She is experienced in providing training to local and multi-national food companies in food safety, hygiene, food packaging and shelf-life, etc, as well as consultancy services in strategic regulatory advisory role in the ASEAN region, especially in developing engagement strategies to increase businesses visibility and market access in the region. Additionally, Dr Siti is also experienced in policy development, auditing & certification, and regulatory compliance for halal food products. Some of her most notable achievements in the halal food industry include implementing the first Food Science and Technology bachelor’s degree with Halal Food Science as a minor in Malaysia in 2006, establishing the first ISO17025 certified Halal Analysis Laboratory in Malaysia in 2012, and creating a suite of training materials, such as Halal Ethics, A Practical Approach in Halal Auditing, and Halal Food: A Practical Course on Forensic Sampling, for the Malaysian food professionals.At the regional level, she was instrumental in creating the Halal Working Group under the ASEAN Food and Beverage Alliance in 2016, with the aim of establishing dialogue with governments in the region to create better understanding, to share knowledge and to find ways to jointly address effectively the cross-cutting issues in the food sector.
