About Sineth Premarathna

I’m an experimental physicist working in thin films and surface science, currently at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in collaboration with the University of Washington. My work focuses on designing and understanding thin film systems at the atomic scale, particularly how deposition conditions and defects influence structural and electronic properties. I have hands-on experience with PVD, sputtering, plasma processes, and UHV-based systems, and use techniques such as XPS, XRD, STM, synchrotron X-ray spectroscopy, and PPMS to connect processing conditions to material performance. Previously at Argonne National Laboratory, I worked on nanoscale molecular systems and molecular machines, studying electronic and magnetic properties using STM and synchrotron-based techniques. I’ve developed strong expertise in UHV instrumentation, cryogenic systems, and process development, along with Python- and MATLAB-based data analysis for experimental workflows. I enjoy solving complex experimental and instrumentation challenges, and I’m interested in roles in thin film R&D, coatings, and advanced materials development where I can apply data-driven approaches to real-world technologies.
