About Simran Panda
As a rising junior pursuing a B.S. in Physics, Astrophysics, and Applied Sciences and Engineering minor at UNC Chapel Hill, I’ve built my college experience around a single goal: making space exploration more accessible, inclusive, and innovative.I’m the Founder and President of Rocketry @ UNC, where I lead a team of 80+ students building and launching high-power rockets, developing custom instrumentation like IR-based safety systems, and training towards Level 1, 2, and 3 certifications and high-power rocketry competitions. I\'m also President of the Carolina Astronomy Association, and serve as Social Chair of the Visibility in Physics Club, where I help build a supportive, diverse community in the sciences at Carolina. When I’m not launching rockets, I work as a Full Dome Theatre Navigator/Tech at Morehead Planetarium and Science Center, presenting live astronomy shows and engaging visitors in the wonders of the cosmos. I’m also a TEDx speaker, having shared my thoughts on eccentricity and identity!I enjoy observational astronomy and am an amateur astrophotographer, capturing deep-sky objects through Skynet telescopes and in-field gear. My research at the Green Bank Observatory through the ERIRA program focused on radio instrumentation and mapping galactic structure, solar emissions, and polarization fields.At the heart of everything I do is a passion for hands-on research and instrumentation, tools that can make future commercial space travel safer, more reliable, and more human.
