ABOUT SIMON PEACOCK
I am an Azure Data Architect currently working at TruRating and prior to that spent 9 years at Betway. I have many years experience working with Microsoft data systems, starting as a SQL Server developer, focusing on OLTP systems, and since 2017 working as a data architect rebuilding SQL Server monolith systems as micro-services in Azure, using a variety of data stores and resources. I have several years of management experience including in my current role. My focus over the last 18 months at Betway and since I joined TruRating has been to redesign the analytical systems, using Azure Data Lake and Azure Databricks. This involved creating patterns and best practices, particularly around security, automation data quality and performance. Recent Achievements at TruRatings- redesigning the existing analytics system to build a Databricks lakehouse to replace the Azure SQL DB data warehouse and Azure Analysis Services architecture- introducing best practices to the data engineering team, including tSQLt, IaC using Terraform, deployment using YAML pipeline, data contracts, and standards such as PEP8 for our PySpark code. Achievements at Betway- working with other data architects to design a security pattern within our Azure Data Lake to allow restricted access to personal data- introduction of Terraform to the data engineering team, including patterns for state file management and deployment via YAML pipelines- redesign of Databricks workspaces including deployment via Terraform and patterns to allow automated deployment of notebooks, permissions based on principal of least privilege, use of job clusters for automated processes using service principals and network security- solved performance issues by introduction of Databricks Serverless SQL Warehouses allowing Tableau to access large data sets and scale up instantly under high usage.
