ABOUT SIMON PATTON

Scientist with extensive knowledge of molecular diagnostics in clinical healthcare, focussing on genomics (genetics, pathology, technology). Expert in quality assurance in this sector with a global knowledge of laboratory testing practices, especially Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). Passionate about ensuring equity of access to accurate high-quality genomic testing for all patients. I’ve worked in the UK public sector (NHS) for most of my career. During much of this time I was the sole paid employee of EMQN, which started its life as a European Commission funded project Since I’ve helped grow the business (with significant input from the EMQN Board) from 1 employee to a team 13 and increased our membership from 23 laboratories in 10 countries, to from 80 different countries. EMQN is the global leader in quality assurance (EQA) activities for clinical diagnostic genomics laboratories. Since 2019, I’ve been working with colleagues at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), and Trustech Smart Health Care Ventures (TSHV) to spin EMQN out of the public sector as an independent private company using a unique UK business model called a community interest company. The new company is called EMQN CIC and the business model reflects our social enterprise roots, protects the ethics of our organisation and shows a strong commitment to the 150+ volunteers from around the world that contribute to our activities.
