ABOUT SIMON GREGORY BURGER
I have always hated waste. From a young age I would dismantle every gadget in sight, to understand how and why it worked and restore it to a fully functional state. Thanks to this I have developed enough general knowledge over the years to repair and construct most things and if I don\'t know how, to communicate the problem efficiently with experts who do know how. This ethos has been of great use to me in my career. As a qualified mechanical engineer, I have been involved with heavy duty engineering, heavy lifts, and optimized logistics from almost day one; first in the Port Industry and later in the Subsea sector of the Oil Industry, following my Masters-Degree in Subsea Engineering in the late 1990s. I never cease to be amazed by the huge physical and financial scale of the projects that I am involved in, and I delight in seeing the pragmatic solutions that were found to problems come to fruition. Over the years I have gained significant experience in a transversal range of subjects that fall within the remit of my Package Manager position: i.e. HSE, QA/QC, Logistics, Contract, Cost, Interfaces and of course Engineering. I have developed a specialty in Subsea Umbilical Engineering within my company and I also manage the manufacture of Flexible Pipelines. Having unfortunately been in close proximity to a freak accident that resulted in a fatality where I was working many years ago, I have been determined to help educate people to improve the way we work and I am currently driving a Safety Program within my company to raise awareness of hidden dangers encountered on our worksites. I have also been involved in training in Quality processes and Lean Management (c.f. my hate of waste).I am very \"hands on\". When I can, I still like to go offshore to see the results of all the hard work and enjoy travelling to meet customers and clients. I believe that by far the best and most efficient way to work is to regularly discuss face to face with people and finish with a well written and communicated MOM, rather than pinging countless mails from the safety of my desk.
