ABOUT SIMON BOULTON
Simon is a Principal Group Leader & Assistant Research Director for Translation at the Francis Crick Institute in London with over 30 years experience studying mechanisms of DNA repair and telomere maintenance. Over the years Simon’s lab has discovered new DNA repair/telomere genes and provided novel insights into human diseases including cancer. In 2016, Simon helped to establish Artios Pharma Ltd (based in Babraham, Cambridge) where he functioned as VP of Science Strategy along side his academic roles at the Francis Crick Institute and Cancer Research UK. The company was founded from in-licensing of two research programs from Cancer Research UK, one of which was discovered and developed in Simon’s academic lab at LRI, Clare Hall Laboratories. Artios are developing new treatments that target DNA repair pathway vulnerabilities to selectively kill cancer cells either as mono-therapies or in combination with existing treatments. Artios’ leading assets, ATR and POLQ inhibitors, entered clinical trials in Q1 and Q3 2021, respectively. Following very encouraging phase 1b/2 data in advanced ATM-null solid cancers, ART0380 (ATRi) received fast track designation from the FDA. In 2024, Simon took on the role of Chief Translation Advisor at Cancer Research UK, with the remit to guide translation and commercialisation of novel cancer therapeutics. In 2025, Simon founded ALTX Tx to develop precision oncology medicines targeting ~10-15% of cancers reliant on alternative lengthening of telomeres. Work conducted in his Crick academic lab over the preceding 10 years identified several very promising ALT targets, which were validated and derisked using existing chemistry. £12.5m seed investment from Syncona, CRH and Crick currently support the drug discovery efforts on 3 targets, which are being prosecuted at the Crick in conjunction with Slingshot Tx and external CROs. Simon has received several prestigious accolades in recognition of his work. He has been awarded the Colworth Medal, the Royal Society Francis Crick Prize Medal and lecture, the Eppendorf/Nature Award, the EMBO Gold Medal and the Paul Marks Prize for Cancer Research. He is also an elected EMBO member, a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and a Fellow of the Royal Society.
