ABOUT SIMANTINI THAKUR

I am an emerging interdisciplinary researcher with a grounding in Forensic Science (BSc) and Criminology & Criminal Justice (MSc, Cardiff University), and developing expertise in the sociotechnical dimensions of justice. My academic trajectory is shaped by a commitment to understanding how AI, forensic technologies, and data systems influence truth-seeking, accountability, and fairness across different legal and cultural contexts.Following my bachelor’s degree, I completed a forensic internship at NRS Medical College (Kolkata), where I observed post-mortems, learned about medico-legal procedures, and developed an early interest in how scientific practices shape judicial outcomes. These experiences informed my growing curiosity about the role of evidence, interpretation, and institutional power in criminal justice.During my MSc, I worked as a Research Assistant on a project examining precursor regulations and control frameworks, which strengthened my analytical skills, policy understanding, and ability to synthesise complex material. This role helped refine my long-term interest in algorithmic governance, regulatory ethics, and transnational justice.Alongside academic research, I have experience as a language and cultural mentor, supporting young people in navigating identity, emotional wellbeing, and educational choices. This role enhanced my communication skills, cultural sensitivity, and ability to work closely with diverse communities. I also have frontline customer-facing experience, where I regularly handled complex enquiries, resolved problems under pressure, and learned to communicate with empathy and clarity. My current research interests include:AI-enabled forensic genealogy and algorithmic evidenceData justice, consent, and digital rightsTransnational and cross-cultural dimensions of justiceScience and Technology Studies (STS) and criminological theoryEthical, legal, and social implications of forensic technologies.I am actively seeking positions where I can expand my interdisciplinary research interests in technology, society, and justice. I am passionate about examining how digital tools—from AI to social media—reshape legal processes, public harm, and regulatory responsibility. I hope to join a research-driven organisation where I can contribute to ethical, forward-looking policy recommendations and evidence-based frameworks. My aim is to apply critical thinking, conceptual depth, and methodological skill to projects that address inequality, accountability, and the changing nature of justice in a digital world.
