May 2018 — Present
I founded the nonprofit organization Visual Snow Initiative (VSI) to advance global awareness, education, recognition, resources, and research for Visual Snow Syndrome (VSS). Throughout my work, I facilitated collaborations between physicians and academic institutions, developed solutions alongside researchers, made neuroscience more accessible regardless of age or health literacy, and supported those affected by VSS worldwide. VSI was the driving force behind the successful and historic effort to secure the first-ever ICD recognition of both Visual Snow Syndrome and its hallmark symptom, Visual Snow, characterized by the continuous presence of static or snow-like dots throughout the visual field, 24/7.VSI funded critical research in seven countries, which led to the clinical and scientific acceptance of VSS as a distinct neurological condition with both visual and non-visual symptoms. These international initiatives contributed to important discoveries about the biological basis and pathophysiology of VSS and supported the development of treatments for symptoms where none had previously existed.VSI also created the first Diagnostic Criteria for VSS and established the first Global Directory of VSS Physicians. We produced hundreds of educational videos for healthcare professionals and patients, developed multimedia content to raise public understanding, and designed physician-patient tools to enhance communication and health literacy. In addition, my team and I organized the first Visual Snow Conference at the University of California, San Francisco, which brought together global experts and individuals living with VSS.I applied my background in communication studies and behavioral sciences to make neuroscience accessible, focusing on VSS, medical marginalization, symptom impact, and solutions for underserved conditions. Through advocacy and collaboration, my work advanced awareness, fostered nuanced understanding, and developed informed, practical approaches.
