As the Anti-Discrimination team’s primary data scientist, I worked to quantify discrimination, develop new solutions and measure the effectiveness of these solutions. Some examples of my work- Developed a system, Project Lighthouse, to measure discrimination while protecting user privacy by enforcing p-sensitive k-anonymity. This system was launched in June 2020 and has generated national news coverage as well as interest from other technology platforms- Designed and implemented a simulation-based power analysis to verify that anonymized data led to accurate conclusions; summarized findings in a research paper- Designed and analyzed experiments that quantified the impact of removing guest photos from the Airbnb booking process; communicated results to company leadership (CEO, COO, CTO, General Counsel, etc.) in order to secure alignment on launch- Guided a team of 4 data scientists to quantify non-photo drivers of disparate impact in the Airbnb user experience using research-level causal inference tools (fixed effects, Oaxaca Decomposition). Influenced company leadership to implement platform-wide solutions (e.g. Instant Book policy changes)- Analyzed inequities in Airbnb’s risk prevention algorithms; advised leadership and product team on mitigations- Externally published findings as part of Airbnb\'s six-year anti-discrimination update- Set up analytics infrastructure for team using Airflow- Multiple invited presentations to leading external organizations (e.g. Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley, Google, LinkedIn, Meta, Color of Change, Upturn) During this time I also worked on the following company-wide initiatives- Developed and taught internal classes on experimentation, machine learning for practitioners and machine learning fairness - Supported the expansion of Airbnb experiences by setting up measurement and experimentation foundations - Managed / mentored data scientists and interns
