About Shweta Barupal

I am a Digital Anthropologist specializing in applied ethnography and human centered research design with 10 years of experience leading, conducting, and collaborating on mixed-methods research projects domestically and abroad. As a researcher, I strive to cultivate an environment of empathy, inclusivity and innovation. I enjoy humanizing technology by uncovering user\'s genuine needs and behaviors to innovate and improve the products and systems they rely on. I have designed and implemented projects ranging from creating the fastest news website and apps for the Financial Times (London), building a platform for patients with cancer in UK to find the best care near their residence to bringing fast free Wi-Fi to the underconnected in Next Billion User countries for NBU at Google. My Master\'s Thesis at University College London was funded by EPSRC (Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council) and the Institute of Making. I love collaborating with users and diverse product, design and engineering teams to facilitate in-field and remote workshops to transform research into accessible and impactful insights and designs through user advocacy and design thinking. I have also managed teams and I enjoy mentoring researchers. When I am not working, I enjoy road trips, cooking for friends and family and functional training. I dabble very poorly in learning new languages but I find joy in communicating with people in their language to try to be a part of their culture.
