About Shruthi Chari
I am a Machine Learning Scientist at Bristol Myers Squibb, where I apply explainable AI methods to derive insights to optimize small-molecule drug discovery. I recently received my PhD in Computer Science from RPI where my thesis focused on supporting and developing user-centered explainable AI methods primarily for clinical use cases. During my PhD I was funded on various grants, including the IARPA Human interpretable attribution of text using underlying structure (HIATUS) program and the Health Empowerment by Analytics, Learning, and Semantics (HEALS) project, a collaboration between RPI and IBM Research.I have over five years of experience in applying text mining, natural language processing, and knowledge representation techniques to health informatics problems, such as comorbidity risk prediction, lifestyle content modeling, and behavior change literature retrieval. I have also completed two internships at IBM Research, where I worked with interdisciplinary teams of computer scientists, cognitive scientists, and behavior scientists, and presented my work at the end of summer poster sessions. I have published my research at several health informatics and semantic web venues including International Semantic Web Conference, Artificial Intelligence in Medicine Journal, Semantic Web Journal and other venues. I am passionate about programming and research, and I enjoy breaking down challenging problems and solving them component-by-component. My goal is to contribute to the advancement of health informatics and explainability research and practice.
