Designed a set of microbenchmarks based on a scan heavy TPC-H query to stress analytical systems, the solution was designed with object-oriented and multi-threading model in python. • Profiled SQL operation (scan) across various cloud vendors to identify bottlenecks in the scan pipeline from storage to compute. Bottlenecks on AWS were reported to the appropriate service teams to investigate/rectify the issue. • Developed a software solution to orchestrate, execute and analyze micro benchmarks on AWS Redshift, GCP BigQuery, Azure Synapse and Snowflake, this aided in reliable and reproducible results from experiments. • Derived a set of custom benchmark metrics such as CPU utilization, I/O bandwidth, Slot utilization (GCP) etc. from database tables (SVL, STL and DMV) to quantify the performance of microbenchmarks. This gave an equivalent comparison point across cloud vendors, since the system architecture widely varies from vendor to vendor. • Developed a mechanism to create and manage infrastructure on different cloud vendors using terraform, this helped to run multiple tests with different configurations effectively. This also aided the team in being frugal by destroying resources after the benchmark runs with minimal engineer intervention.
