About Shreya Chittaranjan

When I was in the 11th grade, I was asked to pick an elective. There was no way that I was going to choose Math (for obvious reasons), so I went with the unknown and chose Multimedia. It was this class that led me to Parsons. In Multimedia, I learned how to code and create websites. When I graduated high school, I decided that design was all I really wanted to do. I didn\'t go to a school that prepared you for SATs; It wasn\'t on the syllabus. More importantly, I didn\'t have a portfolio for art school because my education was purely STEM. This was when I decided to take a gap year. Coming from a traditional Indian society, as surprising as it sounds, a gap year was unheard of; Let alone going to art school. Not having fit in growing up in a world of STEM is what fueled me. During my gap year, I would leave home at 7am to get to my SAT Math classes. Me being the genius I was, dropped Math in the 10th grade because who needs it right? Guess who needed it to take the SATs. Between 8am and 11am I would study with a tutor and then leave to an art studio to work on my portfolio until about 9pm. At the studio, I had the opportunity to simply create and work for something I was ecstatic doing. I don\'t believe in a plan B, so the following November, I sent out my applications to three of my dream schools - the only three schools I would apply to. It was all I worked for and it was all I wanted. I got into all three and I chose Parsons because there was nowhere else I truly saw myself. New York City was no longer going to be just a backdrop on my desktop. My design is a culmination of who I am and where I want to be. I create to make people happy through conceptual ideas and evoke emotions through design. My work is always based off a feeling that I try to communicate. I strive to create significant design. Optimism and positivity are concepts that I most strongly believe in, and many times they are reflected in what I make. I believe that the most important part of creating something is to enjoy every moment of it, Math and all.
