About Shiva Patel

Shiva Patel has over a decade of experience with community-based organizations, start-ups, financial institutions and public agencies, particularly in the areas of energy & climate justice, transformative finance and worker-owned cooperatives. This includes developing and implementing local/state/national projects and programs, conducting policy analysis and advocacy, as well as investment due diligence & deal sourcing. He has worked closely with Local Governments and State Agencies, as well as on the Board of Directors for Planting Justice. He received a B.S. in Environmental Economics & Policy, a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies and an M.B.A focused on finance & entrepreneurship, all from UC Berkeley. Previous clients include- Sunrun - The Institute for Local, Self Reliance (ILSR)- The North Carolina Climate Justice Collective - Various rural community-based organizations in the U.S. Midwest and Southeast Specialties & Interests- Distributed Energy, Community Solar, Community Choice Aggregation (CCA), Rural Electric Cooperatives - Energy & Climate Justice, Circular Economy, Conservation, Solidarity Economy - Debt & equity investments, Project Finance, Cooperative Business Models, Local Economic Development In 2015, Shiva was nominated to the Founding Community Advisory Committee of East Bay Community Energy, a California community choice aggregation (CCA) agency serving over 1 million residents and businesses. Alongside the Local Clean Energy Alliance, they successfully advocated for a Local Development Business Plan focused on the build out of local, clean energy resources and community programs. In 2012, Shiva launched the Energy Solidarity Cooperative (ESC) in Oakland, California, and served as Founder and Board Chair for 3 years. ESC designed and implemented community-based solar energy within marginalized communities. He has split his adult life in California and Washington, DC. Shiva continues to support the racial and economic justice community organizing and policy advocacy work of coalitions including the National Energy Democracy Project, the Southeast Climate & Energy Network, the Tennessee Valley Energy Democracy Movement and the Advancing Equity & Opportunity Democratizing Rural Electric Cooperatives working group (AEO, DREC). He is an avid lover of history and (heterodox) economics, and enjoys music, cooking, meditation, yoga, tea, poetry, futbol and all sorts of outdoor adventures.
