ABOUT SHIVANGI SAXENA

I work as a field reporter and cover gender, politics, crime, environment, and technology. In recent years, I have extensively covered the farmer protests against the now-repealed farm laws; the devastation wrought by the Covid pandemic in North India; gender violence; hate crimes; and the Uttar Pradesh assembly election. My reporting was used as evidence by the Delhi police to take action against the people who made hate speeches at Jantar Mantar in August 2021 which created a mass call for action against the organizers. I was in Eastern Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan for the whole of May and June (2021) covering the devastation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. I covered the impact of the pandemic on women, laborers, and other marginalized sections in the rural parts of the country exposing the collapsed healthcare infrastructure, underreported COVID deaths, inside COVID wards, etc. For my work during the COVID-19 pandemic, I was shortlisted for the prestigious RedInk Award 2022 under the Health and Wellness category. Apart from this, I have an experience in social media management and content writing which helped me to gain insights into technology and various social media platforms. I hold a bachelor’s in Journalism and Mass Communication and Masters\'s in Gender studies. During my college years, I won accolades in sports, debate, poetry, and dramatic competitions. I won the UN LAADLI MEDIA AWARD (best feature-Hindi) 2022 for my story on exposing the religious leader and his anti-women, anti-muslim online brigade. I interviewed and investigated their behavior and posts to present the perspective of not just the leader but also his followers and outlined how a climate of hate against women is built up. The piece highlighted the masculinity of hate triggered by deeply entrenched patriarchy and its intersection with majoritarian fundamentalism.
