About Shirley Qiu

I am an audience strategist focused on data-informed experimentation, learning and growth.In my current role at The Washington Post, I build programs, structures and workflows to accelerate experimentation and innovation to grow audiences for our journalism. I helped launch and now co-lead the Creator Hub, a 6-month program designed to turbocharge personality-driven social video for Post journalists. Previously at The Post, I co-created and led a similar newsroom experimentation program for the past three years; conducted in-depth data analyses for coverage desks across the newsroom; designed and led bespoke strategy training for the newsroom; and planned a company hackathon that, for the first time, enlisted newsroom employees alongside their technical colleagues to develop even stronger, more well-rounded ideas.Prior to The Post, I worked at the American Press Institute, where I consulted newsrooms across the U.S. on how to use metrics strategically and build data-friendly internal cultures; and The Seattle Times, where I grew our audience and community engagement through managing social media accounts, writing newsletters, experimenting with innovative story formats and organizing community events.Throughout my career, it\'s been incredibly important and meaningful to me to build supportive, inclusive communities at work. From co-leading a newsroom mentorship program at The Seattle Times to running a leadership camp during my four years as a national officer at the Asian American Journalists Association, I am most fulfilled when I help others feel welcome, valued and equipped to succeed.
