Experience

  1. Professor

    Pittsburg State University

Aug 1989 — Present · Pittsburg, KS, US

I am a full professor of communication at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas. I have been teaching and living in the Sunflower State since 1989. I completed my Ph.D. at Bowling Green State University in 1985. Before moving to Kansas, I worked for three years as an internal management trainer and consultant for a 650-bed hospital in Toledo, Ohio. My teaching areas include organizational communication, theory and qualitative research methods. My research is primarily qualitative (ethnographic) and includes ritual, group culture, and occupational culture. My book entitled DIRTY WORK: THE SOCIAL CONSTRUCTION OF TAINT (with Melanie Mills and Bob Gassaway) was published in 2007. I have also written academic papers on celebrations, the Joplin tornado of 2011, and \"third places.\" I\'m currently working on a book about \"RV Culture\" and plan to travel the US while doing this research. When not teaching or writing, I enjoy spending time with my two Jack Russell terriers, Nikki and Lucy. Most of all, I love my summers in northern Minnesota where I can go hiking, canoeing, and kayaking with my field biologist husband, Jim, who\'s glad he found an \"outdoor girl.\"
