About Shiju Thomas Michael
An engineer by education with graduate training in biomedical sciences, I am passionate towards finding novel biomarkers and development of simple user-friendly diagnostic methods and assays.Currently, I am working towards identifying extracellular vesicle biomarkers in ocular fluids - tears, aqueous humor and vitreous humor for ophthalmic and neurodegenerative disease diagnosis. Additionally, I am trying to understand the role of cell adhesion molecules, blood retina barrier and acute inflammation in retinal regeneration. Previously, I developed a 3D organotypic cornea model to show that EVs play an important role in corneal wound healing, carrying epithelial basement membrane molecules between corneal epithelial cells and fibroblasts.During my graduate training, I identified soluble CD36 (sCD36) as a possible biomarker in urine for prognosis of diabetic nephropathy. I also played an integral part in developing a ready-to-use paper microfluidic device for performing instrument-free room temperature reverse transcription.
