ABOUT SHERRI C. YOUNG

As a medicinal chemist and an educator, I am passionate about solving research and teaching problems in creative ways. The challenge of balancing drug efficacy and safety with physicochemical properties excites me, and my research focuses on the development of novel anti-inflammatory drug conjugates with improved brain bioavailabilities. I integrate my knowledge of drug discovery and organic synthesis into my organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry courses to spark student interest. I also teach an interdisciplinary nonmajors course about the pharmaceutical industry. In addition to teaching and research, I have a growing interest in faculty development. I have served on the board for the Muhlenberg Center for Teaching and Learning (MCTL) since 2018, and I have been Assistant Director for MCTL since 2020. I initiated a faculty writing group, implemented major curricular revisions for our organic chemistry laboratory, and established a lab assistant program at my institution. I have also held various leadership positions as part of my local section of the American Chemical Society (ACS), including treasurer, chair of the Women Chemists Committee (WCC), and logistics chair for the Middle Atlantic Regional Meeting (MARM).A little about me as a person: When I’m not working, I love to spend time outside hiking, running, biking, and playing golf. Kindness is very important to me, and I try to treat everyone I meet with respect, empathy, and compassion. I also am a huge proponent of a Growth Mindset, and I have spent a lot of time reading about time management, productivity, and self-care strategies. The world has become extremely judgmental, and I try very hard to put myself in another person\'s shoes rather than to make judgments about them.
