About Alex Sherman

I am the Director of the Center for Innovation and Bioinformatics at the Neurological Clinical Research Institute at Massachusetts General Hospital and a Principal Associate in Neurology at Harvard Medical School. The focus of my work and research is conception, design, development of technology, platforms and infrastructure for collaborative clinical research and optimization of clinical research operations in a given disease network. Other areas of interest are creation and management of disease-specific research networks, understanding the benefits of patient-centric research and incentives for research collaborations. As the result, a patient-centric research platform and accelerated research environment, NeuroBANK®, was conceived and implemented. It allows capture and aggregation of clinical and clinical research data from simultaneously running research projects and linking these data with bio and image banks, GWAS files, and omics. NeuroBANK won the Best Practice Award from Bio-IT World Congress in Precision and Translational Medicine category in 2018.Another platform, PRO-ACT, makes possible merging of heterogeneous data from 23 ALS clinical trials, generating an invaluable resource for both the design of future clinical trials and the identification of unique observations, novel correlations, and biomarkers of ALS. The project was recognized in 2013 and 2016 with the Best Practice Award by the Bio-IT World Congress and Clinical Informatics News. Numerous research projects around the world were conceived with data from PRO-ACT.Another aspect of my research is developing a system of incentives and supporting technologies for standardized yet flexible approach to secure collaboration, integration, harmonization, and sharing of clinical and research information by all clinical research enterprise participants.Patient empowerment in research is a new paradigm that I investigate as part of several disease-specific People-Powered research networks.
