The award-winning Diversity/Equity/Inclusion training modules - The Five Shifts Curriculum - was conceptualized and developed while serving as a Consultant with Conflict Management Group in Cambridge, Massachusetts and for which I was awarded a Rockefeller Foundation Grant. Its purpose is to re-orient the perceptions people have of themselves and others such that they can promote the principle of unity in diversity, work collaboratively, and where everyone knows that they have something to offer and something to learn. Due to the fact that this curriculum is customizable – it is being used by Starr Commonwealth in Michigan to address student conduct, bullying, violence and spectrum disorder for youth with autism in places like Columbine and Virginia Tech. The Rose Garden Forum –making the head to heart shift. Originally designed for students – then customized for various settings including parents, faculty and staff – this program provides a healthy context for engendering “voice” for students on the margins in a diverse student body and reducing the effects of racism. The Rose Garden Forum won the Village Pride Award for Hometown Hero at Chapel Hill High School in North Carolina for closing the academic achievement gap, increasing parent involvement and reducing the effects of racism. The Cat Lion Coaching: Designed, developed, and delivered a coaching model which was used at Chapel Hill High School to help disconnected, disengaged, and rebellious students realize their full potential. This approach is used in a one on one setting to assist and unleash the latent power in students, and for bullying and violent students to remember who they truly are when they come to recognize and “see” that the cat chooses to see the Lion and Lioness within him or herself.
