About Shelley McKittrick

I have been working to support the most marginalized members of both HIV/AIDS and unhoused communities through leadership roles in nonprofit, corporate and government arenas for the past 30 years. My passions are racial, social, economic, healthcare and housing equity and justice, and trauma-informed services and organizations. I have developed, implemented and led numerous programs that worked to address these inequities; from developing and successfully attaining Congressional Black Congress funding to implementing the first HIV Peer Advocacy Program in metro Denver to transforming high-barrier homeless services to low barrier, housing 1st, harm reduction services in Santa Cruz, CA. Most recently, as the City of Aurora, Colorado\'s first Homelessness Program Director, I was able to develop and implement the House Aurora Partnership, that used municipal marijuana tax revenue to provide low-barrier access to deposits and 1st months rent to those seeking to end their homelessness with move-in costs being their biggest barrier, and rental assistance to those facing eviction. Although there are many programs that appear to do the same thing, this program sought to eliminate the barriers that typical programs contain - such as income minimums, felony backgrounds, etc. Folks could also access the program up to 3 times per year. in In this role I was also able to provide national-level trainings to all of the nonprofits working to end homelessness in Aurora with invitations extended across the metro region. These training focused on established and emerging best-practices including trauma-informed care, operating trauma-informed shelter programs, convening racial equity leaders and learners to further this incredibly difficult work.My expertises and skills lie in: trauma-informed care, access to care and services, capacity building, program development and implementation, adult learning, grounding day-to-day programmatic work in sometimes complex and foreign practices. I love training and presenting to folks who are experiencing homelessness or living with HIV, and those working in the fields. As a consultant or trainer, I am engaging and fun, while also being dead serious about the topic(s) of the day.At this time I am seeking employment or consulting work that will assist organizations in providing the best possible low-barrier services for any population focus, and supporting the training and professional development of the next generation of leaders!
