ABOUT SHAZIB HAQ

Shazib is currently an optometrist doing a Fellowship in Medical Contact Lenses at the Casey Eye Institute at Oregon Health Science University.He is from a diverse background, growing up mainly in Irvine, California but living around Orange County and also spending a few years in London, England. His childhood passion for photography, coupled with his knack for problem solving and need to help out led him to pursuing a career as an optometrist.Shazib went to undergrad at the University of California, Davis, where he received a B.S. in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior in 2015. While there, he was a member of the California Aggie (the school paper), as well as a member of the Shifa Community Clinic. However, his largest role at Davis was at Unitrans, a student-run transit system serving the students and residents of Davis. He was able to grow his leadership, responsibility, and problem-solving skills in various positions, such as transit driver, supervisor, and Operations Manager. He picked up various experiences along the way, as well.After undergrad, he took some time off to work as a optometric assistant and technician, learning skills and better understanding the profession that he wanted to be a part of. Shazib began his O.D. degree at the University of California, Berkeley in August of 2017 and graduated in May of 2021. He was honored to graduate with the Beta Sigma Kappa Honor Society\'s Silver Medal, as well as the Golden Retinoscope for the Class of 2021. During his first post-grad year, Shazib completed a residency in Ocular Disease at the Baltimore VA, treating and seeing many types of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and various other posterior, anterior, and neurologic pathologies. He also had the opportunity to rotate with specialists at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute, working with cornea, neuro-ophthalmology, and retina specialties.He hopes to work in a variety of settings simultaneously, to match the experiences he had in prior roles. He is primarily interested in specialty contact lenses as well as anterior segment disease. Being involved in clinical research, teaching, and seeing patients in a private practice setting are all positions that he would like to be a part of.
