ABOUT SHAYAN GHASEMI

I am an M.A.Sc. candidate in Chemical Engineering at the University of Waterloo and an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) who bridges process-engineering rigour with advanced materials innovation. My research centres on nanomaterial-based aerogels and direct-ink-writing of sustainable polymers, where I design ultra-light structures for applications ranging from thermal insulation to electromagnetic-interference (EMI) shielding—most recently exploring MOF-integrated systems. Before graduate school I worked in the utility unit at Behran Oil, comparing PSA, membrane, and IGG routes for nitrogen generation. I led the simulation campaign in Aspen HYSYS, ran HAZOP-based risk assessments, and helped select PSA as the safest, most economical option. I have also modelled methylamine and green-methanol plants, authored SOPs, and delivered water-treatment train designs for cooling-tower and boiler service. In academia, I have published peer-reviewed work on droplet-templated aerogels, won the Transformative Quantum Technologies Challenge for a quantum-computing approach to environmental modelling, and mentored 50 + undergraduates in process design, Python, and HYSYS simulations. These experiences sharpened my ability to translate lab insights into scalable, industrially relevant solutions and to communicate complex ideas across disciplines. I’m motivated by sustainability, cross-functional teamwork, and the chance to push materials and processes to new frontiers. Let’s connect if you share an interest in process optimization, advanced polymers, or decarbonization technologies—I’m always open to collaboration and fresh perspectives.
