About Shawn Roll
I study how work shapes health and how we can design systems that support people rather than break them.My work sits at the intersection of worker health, technology, and work systems, with a focus on understanding how physical, psychological, and organizational factors interact to influence performance, well-being, and long-term outcomes. Ultimately, my goal is to help shift worker health beyond a reactive model toward proactive, data-informed, and systems-based approaches that support sustainable participation in work.Across my research, I aim to answer a core question: How can we better measure, detect, and prevent injury, strain, and stress in real-world work environments? To do this, I integrate approaches from- Occupational therapy → function, participation, return to work - Musculoskeletal sonography → early detection, tissue-level insight - Human factors & environmental systems → design, technology, and contextMy work spans- Prevention and management of work-related musculoskeletal disorders - Use of imaging and sensing technologies to detect early changes in worker health - The role of workplace environments, stress, and emerging technologies (including AI) in shaping performance and well-being - Translation of research into practical strategies for clinicians, organizations, and systemsAreas of focus- Worker health and well-being - Musculoskeletal imaging and assessment - Workplace design and ergonomics - Future of work and technology integration - Injury prevention and rehabilitation
