About Shawn Lai

Our clients range from large public entities to small family businesses with a goal of building strong relationships and providing unique accounting/tax/legal solutions for our clients. I have extensive experience in valuation, pricing, tax analysis & forecasting, and negotiating settlements. I currently review, analyze, and determine, using the three approaches to value, whether real estate assessments are fair, and file appeals/evidence to support a lower assessment. I have extensive experience developing budgets and tax estimates for clients interested in acquiring/building new projects or for those looking to enter specific industries/markets. I have experience in a variety of industries which include, but are not limited to, Commercial (Hotels, Retail, Office, Mixed-Use, Assisted Living Facilities, Restaurants, etc), Industrial (Distribution Centers, Warehouses, Manufacturing, Data Centers, etc), and Multi-Family complexes. Markets I have experience dealing with jurisdictions in Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Wisconsin, and Illinois. I currently focus on Cook County and it\'s collar counties. I also have experience in identifying credits & incentives and determining their potential benefits. My experience also includes income tax compliance for individuals, partnerships, corporations, government contracting, and contract cost & price analysis.My hometown is Beavercreek, Ohio; I graduated from Beavercreek High School in 2009. I graduated in May 2014 from The University of Dayton with my MBA with a concentration in accounting. I also earned my Bachelor\'s of Science in Business (BSB) at UD, majoring in Accounting & Finance, with a minor in Management Info. Systems. I graduated in December 2020 from UIC John Marshall Law School with my Juris Doctor (JD) in the evening program while working full time. I am currently studying for the BAR exam. I am eligible to sit for the CPA exam. I am interested in any opportunities in property tax law, corporate law, tax law, mergers & acquisitions, accounting, real estate, tax (consulting, compliance, commercial property tax), or legal field.

   As a Sr. Property Tax Consultant, I perform reviews of commercial and industrial properties in industries such as but not limited to Hotels, Student Housing, Multi-Family Residential Complexes, Banks, Offices, Retail Stores, Service Stations, Distribution Centers Warehouses, and many other types of properties. After reviewing properties for appeal opportunities, recommendations are issued to our clients, appeals are filed, and settlements are negotiated. I also prepare tax budgets and pre-acquisition/pre-development reports which provide the estimated property taxes pre/post-developmenf. Geographical areas of responsibility include Iowa, Kansas, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, and Missouri. I am responsible for numerous townships in Cook County, Illinois. I have extensive experience in filing appeals and developing pre-acquisition values for properties in Cook County.I also act as the main point of contact for our clients to assist with any requests or questions they may have. Duties range from providing periodical updates, coordinating nationwide requests of questions, and provide recommendations from other jurisdictions.
